The ‘Self-Driving’ Vehicle, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

A majority of accidents that have been reported between self-driving and human driven cars have been caused by the self-driving car. That is because the models and code that are input into the car are programmed in “If/Then what” models. Instead of speeding up past the speed limit and crossing and double white line in order to safely merge into the lane, self-driving cars will respond by in-action and can cause accidents Some new issues that lawyers might have to consider in personal injury and defense work include:

  • Having to hire experts who can read computer code in order to determine if the accident was caused by faulty computer code in self-driving cars.
  • Whether the driver was in the car and had some sort of control over the car or whether they were completely unaware of the road.
  • Examination of coverages beyond just the coverage for the driver such as coverage for the manufacturer, the computer programmer and the instructor who taught the driver how to use the self-driving car.

Determine if the code was hacked due to the coder not creating code that is restricted.
